Setian’s Project

Web Based – Immersive Artwork – Video Mapping

In response to the 2020 global pandemic, I was invited by artist Carmen Gil Vrolijk, director of the renowned expanded theater company La Quinta del Lobo, to architect an immersive digital sanctuary. The project sought to provide a global platform for individuals to share their personal experiences, reflections, and collective resilience during the period of mandatory quarantine and social isolation.

Creative & Technical Concept The challenge was to transform fragmented human data into a cohesive, immersive experience. I developed an expansive 3D web environment that functions as a celestial archive of human memory.

  • Infinite Spatial Design: Utilizing a 3D engine, I created a boundless void that serves as a canvas for thousands of unique user-submitted stories.
  • Generative Visualization: Each story was represented as a custom-coded “whirlpool”—a dynamic, floating entity that drifts through the infinite space.
  • Virtual Projection Mapping: I applied digital projection mapping techniques within the 3D environment to create a sense of depth and luminosity, mimicking a physical art installation in a purely digital realm.

The Experience As a global archive, the website allowed users to navigate through a “galaxy” of shared experiences, turning the isolation of the pandemic into a visually stunning experience of interconnectedness.

The story of each person was reinterpreted through an algorithm in the form of the shape of a generative-art spiral line. The words in the storytelling of each person modify these shapes, creating unique living sculptures that cohabitate the infinite space.

Infinitos Live Performance

Final Phase: Architectural Intervention & Live Performance

Spatial Translation: From Digital Archive to Physical Stage The project culminated in a grand-scale live performance that bridged the gap between the virtual archive and the physical architecture of the Teatro Colón de Bogotá. Utilizing photogrammetry, I generated a precise 3D reconstruction of the theater’s interior, focusing on the intricate geometry of the inner balconies. This digital twin allowed for the development of site-specific generative visuals in TouchDesigner, which were then projected onto the theater’s historic surfaces using a high-intensity array of over 40,000 lumens.

The Performative Installation Moving beyond traditional spectatorship, the 2021 phase saw La Quinta del Lobo transform the theater into a non-traditional “performative installation.” By integrating interdisciplinary artists with immersive stage design and dynamic projections, we invited the audience to inhabit and traverse the space rather than merely observing it from their seats.

Reconfiguring the Monument This intervention effectively reconfigured the Teatro Colón—not as a static venue for a single event, but as a fluid, technology-driven ecosystem. By blurring the lines between art, technology, and architecture, the project fostered a new, intimate relationship between the viewer and the monument, reclaiming the space as an open laboratory for contemporary creation.

In the words of Carmen Gil:

Infinites ∞, is a transmedia art and technology project in which the stories of the audience will be protagonist.

2020 has brought great changes in the way of conceiving the role and functions of artistic and cultural venues. Faced with this challenge the Teatro Colón – Bogotá continues to innovate in its programme thanks to a project developed through an artistic residency with the collective La Quinta del Lobo, directed by the artist and professor from the U. de los Andes, Carmen Gil Vrolijk , and integrated by the musician and composer Camilo Giraldo and the electronic artist Sebastián Gonzalez Dixon, they have been invited to work in the theater as a temporary home, to develop this project that will integrate various disciplines.

In Infinites, the collective seeks to collect stories to build a collaborative work that represents the thoughts and reflections people have had in this context of a pandemic.

How do an artist, a scientist, an indigenous person, a teacher or a student see this time? What do they discover? Is this reality revealing or is it terrifying?

The goal of the project is to hear many voices. People who want to be part of the project will share their stories, (they can be reality or fiction), through a website that will allow them to be virtual storytellers and in turn to be protagonists of this artwork.

The project comprises three phases; the first one will be launched on November 2020 and will accompany the project for several months, texts will be compiled on a website with a very simple interface that works on all the devices, the public can share all the stories they want anonymously.

These stories revolve around 4 axes:

– The revelations: These are the discoveries, some people read books, others learned how to cook, some observed nature, or realized something about society that they had not noticed before.

– The Nostalgias: everything that is missed; a hug, concerts, crowds, traveling, freedom.

– Detachments: these refer to everything that is not necessary. Traffic jams, crowds, going to an office, the waste.

– The omens: the vision that each one has of the future.

The second part of the project will be to create experimental films based on the collected micro-stories, four short films for the web will be produced with invited artists, one for each category mentioned above.

Finally, in the third phase planned for the first semester of 2021, La Quinta del Lobo will be in charge of creating a performatic installation within the Theater in which the public will be able to inhabit the space that will be intervened in a non-traditional way through projections and stage design and will also bring together a small group of artists from various disciplines.

This project will allow us to see the Teatro Colón not only as a place of passage for a specific event, but also reconfigured as a space open to various disciplines linked by art and technology, thus generating a different relationship with the viewer.
